Competitive Strategy by Michael E. Porter

Michael E. Porter’s book Competitive Strategy was the last book recommendation from my favorite professor in the last class of my MBA program. Unfortunately, it was also the best recommendation and would have been an amazing help two years earlier! Competitive Strategy was recommended by my Global Strategic Planning professor, Kamal Ranasinghe D.B.A.

Competitive Strategy was a key element for me defining and assessing risks where I had never seen risk before. Mainly because it taught me how to define risk, and how to put it into a comprehensive plan. Excellent for project managers. Absolutely necessary for anyone in management. You shouldn’t fear risk, you should seek it out, acknowledge it, and address it.

This is a book that lives by my desk and I am sure will be a cornerstone in my career.

About the Author

The world changed for me about two months into my M.B.A. program. While I have always risen quickly to management roles, learning how to truly be a part of a business and its many systems began to really excite me. While I have loved taking out-dated processes and digitizing them for cost savings, I am excited to take my project mangement experience to greater heights and really contribute to a company's growth as the head of a team excited to drive change. -Justin Velthoen
